Maternal Angus. Calving Ease, Early Growth, Muscle, Fat, Fertility.

In a 1200mm rainfall its important our cattle can handle any set of conditions thrown at them, sheep are consistantly eating the grass out from underneath them forcing them to do it tough. This quickly shows up the animals that can handle it, and those that can't. Calving down around 450 cows, with 190-200 AI'd annually to industry leading maternal genetics. Genetic selections are based on CED, CEM, GL, BWT, High early growth, low MCW, EMA, positive FAT's. We aim to breed low maintenance cattle that get in calf easily, whatever the conditions. Whilst Calving Ease is a must, Maternal Calving Ease is a non negotiable... narrow hipped cattle have no place at Lochs. The progeny are fast growing and deep bodied, well suited to grass fattening and domestic short fed systems. Due to our emphasis on calving traits and lower Mature Cow Weight (smaller bulls) they are also a good fit for dairy heifer joinings. Breeding objectives

calving ease
Selecting for CE Direct and CE Daughters, but not one without the other. Couple that with a shorter Gestation Length (give your cow longer to get back in calf) and a low birthweight and you're on the way to an easy care animal.
early growth
After hitting the ground at a light BWT we want genetics that will hit their straps early, focussing selection on 400 Day Weight. This will get sale steers off farm earlier, and heifers at joinable weight sooner.
muscle
Muscle for improved carcass, but more importantly muscle for maternal attributes, creating deep bodied wide hipped females... the type that make good cows. It increases their ability to maintain CS and inturn improves fertility.
fat
We want our cattle to have FAT on the higher end of the scale. They need to be able to maximise the "haystack on their back" while times are good, so they can draw on it in leaner periods. It will also enable higher stocking rates.
fertility
Calving ease, short gestation, early growth, muscle and fat... they all positively contribute to creating a cow that gets in calf early and continues to do so easily.
LOW MATURE COW WEIGHT
Lower Mature Cow Weight means more functional cows that require less feeding to maintain, it has to be coupled with high early growth to ensure we're not cutting ourselves short.
